For my second video project I had originally decided that I wanted to shoot, edit, and create a video of my last and final Spring Day as a senior at Lyndon State College. Since my parents blessed me with younger siblings I came home late Tuesday to find that all of my shots had been recorded over by lip-syncing to Demi Levato and thirteen year old girl giggles.

I racked my brain on how and if it was possible to come up with something different that I was just as passionate about. I began to think of my friends and family, upcoming graduation and future goals. That is when Fly Dye came to my mind. Fly Dye apparel is a screen-print clothing line a close friend of mine created a few months back and I have gotten the privilege and pleasure of watching this dream of his progressively evolve. I have watched triumphs and failures, seen torn shirts and paint splattered jackets. I immediately knew that this was something that was going to be a great success. My friend, Taylor, his passion to screen-print is admirable and provoked my curiosity to learn more about this art medium.

My goal for my video was to capture small town adults rising into the local business realm. I wanted to give Fly Dye the exposure I think it deserves, and was eager to hear the point of view of a young adult trying to break into a close knit local business community. With Vermont being in the top 5 places in the United States to produce local products, I used what I previously knew about this type of community and opened my mind to others of my own generation and the struggle they may or not be facing and the influence that this has on other young adults.

I got exactly what I bargained for, my original video was 5:06 long after first edits! I was swallowed by the drive and motivation it takes to get the same amount of respect and recognition as a serious business entrepreneur. In the end I got to get the real story behind a business I have been supporting since the first edition shirts were made, I received a sneak peak into what it takes to physically make a screen-print shirt and ultimately made a video that can be used for personal or professional leverage.

Video Project 2 Proposal

For my second video project, I would like to capture and create a video of my last Spring Day here at Lyndon State College. Spring Day, I believe, is one of the most bonding and relaxing events that the Lyndon SGA creates. It comes at a time where everyone is literally tired of being inside all of the time, due to not only cold weather but the demands of the Spring semester. It gives students a chance to kick back and enjoy our classmates and hopefully the weather. It marks having around a month left of school, for the summer for some, and forever for others. Myself being in the "others" category of this event this year has made me want to create a special video for myself, my friends and my family to enjoy now and years down the road when I am missing Lyndon State. I will be working alone and will shoot video throughout the day Friday, then will edit and write the 400 word text document to accompany.

Video Project One

I got my first tattoo at Washburn Tattoo in St. Johnsbury, 4 years ago. I fell in love not only with the art that was being produced but the love and intelligence of the artists working in the studio. I quickly became a return customer, proudly adorning more and more tattoos. I became friends with the great people that I had lately spent more time with.

By the time I returned for my ninth or tenth tattoo I was “one of the gang”. I frequently visited just to say hi and see how everyone was doing and was greeted with open arms and friendly smiles. I was eventually offered, by the owner, an amazing opportunity to internship with Washburn Tattoo. Unfortunately, with a full semester of credits and a full-time job, the internship would have just been too much on my plate, I woefully declined and explained to them my consuming life situation. As they had always been since I had met them, the tattoo artists were supportive and understanding.

Walking out that day, a small piece of me was crushed that I couldn't be a part of the culture and the people I grew to love due to, more or less, college responsibilities. I was comfortable in my school, work and home life routine and feared adding another course to my meal would inevitably lead to me falling behind. And with graduation so close, it was not a risk I was willing to take.

I was surprised to see the studio phone number pop up on my phone when I got home later that evening. My friend and owner, Bruce Washburn was calling to not offer me an internship but to offer me a job. A job that would work around my school schedule, and allow me to work on my school work in my down town at the studio. How could I say no?! In October of 2013, I stopped being Parker, over worked waitress, to Parker, tattoo studio manager.

This was and is the first time in my life where I really enjoy going to work everyday, often spending my days off there as well. I was in my comfort zone and surrounded by nothing but motivators, innovators and friends. I hope you enjoyed my little glimpse inside Washburn Tattoo and hope to see you in the studio soon!

Video Producing Newspapers

For my assignment I chose to find an online newspaper that not only produced online videos but touched based on the new uprising of Multimedia. Netnewcheck.com is an internet based business of local digital media. I thought this was a great toss up between traditional newsprint and the uprising internet newspapers. This site has a wide variety of ways to view information from reading to radio, from portals to mobile apps. Once I clicked the"video" link I was directed to a page and it offered me 10+ pages of web links to videos they deem most important. I really do like the intense amount of information of this site but it is also its major set back, there is almost too much information to choose from hat it becomes overwhelming. It is very difficult to find an exact topic you may be looking for. I DO enjoy though that this site in continually updated for 12 hours every work day, granted that means after 5 the news becomes old and you have to wait until the next morning for "whats new" but that may be done on purpose so people aren't naturally sucked into the internet all night long. Overall I give this site a B+.

I enjoyed this website, I liked its wide variety of news being offered. both local and national. It is easy to navigate but does take a moment to find something specific if that is what you are after. I liked its scroll feature that is used to cover the most "important" stories of the day.
It is a very bold bright and clean website which I also thought was really cool. Websites these days are overly cluttered and sometimes hard to to tell what is advertisement versus what are stories pertaining to the website.
The other thing I liked about this website is the fact that they post rebuttal posts. For an example there was a video about a Mom being a "Pinterest Mom", saying she creates her activities and whatnot from the website Pinterest. While right below it was another video of a Mom who said she doesn't use Pinterest but creates activities anyway, it was neat to see two sides of that story and have such easy access to both.
So over all I give this website a B!

The gallery I looked at is a gallery within an article on the USARUGBY.com site. I'm a huge fan of rugby and after playing all weekend I was excited to see some photo galleries. I chose this article because of its inspirational message about The Inner City Education Foundation Public Schools in Los Angeles. The gallery itself was more inspirational and had beautiful pictures than it did actual Rugby play, which I did sort of like since I've seen plenty of pictures of tackles. The photos are very well done and the article just made them better.

I googled Rugby Slideshows and clicked on the first link which was a trip advisor site and I assumed that it would be a slideshow of Rugby games but in fact it was a slideshow of Rugby, Tennessee which  I found hilarious and decided to watch the entire segment. The music is a little lame but the pictures are great and maybe I will add to my bucket list to visit Rugby, Tennessee!

I had a hard time finding a slideshow for the sport rugby, I came across this one and was very disappointed. It doesn't engage people. there isn't a lot of information and it lacks any sort of motivation to continue looking at it.

Superintendent Schmidt proposes school manual revisions.

Springfield Board of Education debate making changes to school manual.

Springfield Board of Education voted 5-2 to approve the new manual changes proposed by Superintendent Max Schmidt.

"This is the first time the manual has been revised in 20 years", stated Schmidt, "It's overdue, There have been several changes in the law and the mores that we must recognize". Janet Biss, who opposes the changes being made debated that, "These rules were good enough for my generation; they're good enough for students now".

Changes made were that teachers could not use physical punishment on students, teachers must report all violations of school policy to the building principal, students convicted of using any kind of drug will be suspended for no more than 20 days, and all students found with drugs in school will be turned over to juvenile authorities.

For my Website Comparison assignment I chose two Savannah, Georgia news stations:

After looking at both sites these are the results I came up with:

WSAV3:

• Seems to be all headlines, so subheadings to "hook" you into the story. All grey color scheme as well. No way to distinct different categorized stories from one another.
• Slideshow seems to be the main attraction of the page
• Video and slideshows seem to more of a focus than actual written articles
• Local & National categories, clearly labeled, no hierarchy of one from another 
• Seems to have the larger staff because of more local and national coverage

Savannah Now

• Clear headlines and subheadings to get you interested, blue/grey color scheme, headings in blue, updates in red.
• Limited video and slideshows
• Actual written articles seem to be the main focus
• Seems to be more strictly local news
• Almost no sign of National News besides in subcategories located near bottom

Man charged with assault after accidentally shooting friend in Albany, Vt.

 

 

Vermont State Police and Vermont Department of Fish and Game have charged Conrad Masse, with four separate counts after hunting accident leaves friend wounded. 

 

 

After undergoing a joint investigation Vermont State Police and Vermont Department of Fish and Game have charged Conrad Masse, 76 of Craftsbury, with Aggravated Assault, Shooting from the Road, Having a Loaded Rifle in his Vehicle and Not having proper display of permits for bear hounds, following a hunting accident in October 2013.

Masse is to appear in the Orleans Superior Court on February 28th, 2014. 

Masse and Wayne Goff, 58 of Wolcott were using GPS to track two bear hounds that they had released on the trail of a bear on Urie Rd. in Albany, VT. Masse drove his truck with Goff as a passenger to Urie Rd. in an attempt to get in front of the bear being pursued by dogs.

When the bear crossed the road Goff exited the vehicle to wait for the bear as Masse drove approximately 541 feet down the road. Masse then opened fire with a Remington .30-06 and fired at least three shots.

One round struck the bear, the second round struck a tree, the third round struck Goff in the midsection hitting his pelvic area. Goff was transported to North Country Hospital then later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock where he was released and is in stable condition.

Barton Man dies when Chevrolet drives through Central Restaurant.

Annie Coulter, 82, of Barton lost control of her Chevrolet on Depot Street in Lyndonville today, driving into Central Restaurant. John Barker, 59, of Concord, who was uninjured during the incident, collapsed and died of a heart attack. 

John Barker suffered a heart attack and died after witnessing an out of control vehicle crash into Central Restaurant.

While traveling southbound on Depot Street in Lyndonville, Annie Coulter, swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian and experienced brake failure, sending her crashing into Central Restaurant.

Barker was inside the restaurant at the time of the incident and received only minor cuts from flying glass . but as Barker tried to help Coulter out of her vehicle, he expressed concerns of chest pains and soon collapsed and died of a heart attack.

Blog Critique

Gawker Critique 

The blog I chose to critique was Gawker. Gawker is a blog site with the self proclaimed slogan " Today's gossip is tomorrow's news".

As of January 2014 Gawker has an estimated monthly visitors of near 22,000,000 and is ranked 413th according to eBiz/MBA (eBusiness/knowledgebase).

After reading the assigned chapters on how blogs are used and created and why I would have to say that Gawker is following the design principles guidelines for a successful blog fairly well. i.e. bold headlines, introductions, subhead, hyperlinks, videos, pod-casts, photographs.

They also execute the inverted pyramid very well, giving a brief description  under each hyperlink to get you interested in the article.

 My only bad critique would have to be towards the content involved. Is there any truths behind these gossip stories or are they simply hearsay? They (Gawker) openly admit that the "news" stories you are readying are gossip, where we may not know the original source or how reliant that source may be.


I haven't ever used Gawker and a blog like it and don't think I would just for the fact that I'm not keen on not knowing where my information is coming from but design wise, this site works very well.

Amber Alert for Missing Juvenile from Sunderland, VT

An Amber Alert has been issued for a missing boy by the name of Zachary Lee, 12 years old from Sunderland, VT. Lee was last seen after being dropped off at his foster home at 2327 North Road in Sunderland Vermont.


 Lee is approximately 5', 95 lbs, with shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes, with a French accent. Last seen wearing a black puffy coat with a white stripe, jeans, a light-colored sweater and blue & black sneakers.


VSP have reason to believe that Lee's biological Mother, Patricia Kane, may have taken off with Lee. Kane has been highly unstable and volatile since Lee's arrival in the US, as well as a documented history of such attempts while the child was in the custody of the Republic of France.


Kane is a 49 year old white female, approximately 6' tall, weighing 125 lbs, with white/blonde hair (possibly dyed), brown eyes. and also has a French accent. Her direction and mode of transportation are unknown.




Concerns for Lee's safety stem from his unfamiliarity with this area since he has only been state side since January 14, 2014, the inconsistency with his established pattern of behavior and his mothers given history of attempt to abscond Lee in France.
